LOST Retrospective: "The Other 48 Days"

So I started to re watch LOST from the beginning a couple of weeks ago and I thought it would be cool to blog about what I am watching as I didn't the first time around.

There are a few reasons why season 2 remains to be my favourite season of LOST and this episode is probably the main reason. The fact that the tail end of the plane survived (lovingly referred to as the "tailies") and went through a far more brutal ordeal than the front end of the plane is something that I just find really interesting. The tailies went through the polar opposite (more or less) than the front end did. Was it more brutal becuase of Ana Lucia? Arguable but I think not. I think that the tailies had more "good people" that the others wanted over the front end and that is why they suffered more. If you look back on it, it is bizarre as to why the front end (while they were shacked up at the beach) did not get attacked like the tailies did. I think a reason why is becuase maybe the others knew eventually they would take the "good people" but will wait until Claire has her baby (and we all know that storyline).

I love the burgeoning relationship between Ana Lucia and Goodwin. They start to rely on each other and go to each other for certain things. Which makes me think when exactly did Ana Lucia start to question his story? I do not think it was at the beach but more of when they were camping near the river and there was Nathan who was causing quite the insurgence against Ana Lucia. I think the cracks start to show when Nathan is put in the "jail" and Goodwin is not so confident in his coversations with Ana Lucia. So when, Nathan eventually dies (thanks Goodwin) Ana Lucia knows that the "others" will be coming for them soon and hence the move. As she is a police woman she knows she needs to get him alone to get some more info (I believe on the "force" that is known as "getting the 411"). Perfect timing when Goodwin offers to "test" the radio by himself and what leads to him getting found out.

There are so manynew characters to this episode which I love, the introduction of Libby, the kids, Mr Eko, Bernard, that random aussie tourist I mean stewardess - all of which get more attention later on.

However, this is the only time in which I disagree with my beloved LOST - I do not think that Shannon needed to be killed (at least this early on). Even though by this stage she had been through somewhat of a transformation (no longer relies on Boone etc) I don't think she was quite finished. Which makes me wonder - was she caught drink driving on the island as that has been seen to be a bit of a death wish for character on the show.

I like to think of this episode as Season 2 part 2 as it really ushers in a new LOST for us all to watch and enjoy.

Cougar Town - Epsiode 2

I must have had my Dick Tracy hat on last night because I figured out why Cougar Town will never be successful.....it only goes for half an hour and seeing the characters are poorly formed they will never get the chance to really grow and thus gain any sort of recognition from the audience. SO the show has to be extended to an hour long. Not that hard and I actually believe that writers could make it work. Maybe.

A quick recap of episode 2 is that Jules realises she never got to live her crazy 20's because she had a kid and didnt have a funny story involving an all night boozy slut fest. That's it. For half an hour that's the premise. She does go out and does that (which I actually didnt mind as they retold it through mobile phone pictures) but then the rest of the episode falls a bit flat.

There is more interaction with the hot neighbour but the way he is being played is quite frustrating. He is meant to be a man whore with feelings (?) but is a total douche to Jules which means (obviously) she wants to communicate more with him. "Paper buddies" is the lamest thing I have ever heard of and if I ask anyone (ever) to be my "paper buddy" I might as well go live in Penrith with a house filled with cats becuase I think that is what hell is like.

Alright so after watching 2 episodes I am officially confused (and very frustrated) as to WHY they made the ex-husband a reject from Police Academy. His character makes no sense to ANYONE on the show. To see Jules, someone who apparently is responsible and has the business acumen to run a Real Estate thingy (not too sure what it is as that older cougar always walks in on her house inspections) would ever go out with someone like that. I know they met in their 20's but I am pretty sure she hasn't changed her dating type that much. And to make his character more pointless, they make him drive a golf buggy around for an entire episode and all of his interactions are based on him "driving a golf buggy".

Busy was the fun and loveable slut and she did have all of the best lines. The son apparently is straight (for some reason I thought he was gay). The best friend is annoying and so what's the word.....unbelievable. And to top the confusion off Jules gets a random young hot boyfriend that we have never met before and I doubt we will see again.

All of this is making me think, why was this never an hour long? The story lines are not solid enought to be engaging for the 22 minutes they are on for and the characters do not make sense to the past, present and/or future. So I am stuck wondering, how long will this show go on for? After the shock and cliche fun value fades there is nothing to keep the audience ineterested.

In concluson, I am happy that the crypt keeper arms did not invade my personal space in episode 2.

Cougar Town - Pilot

Firstly, I love cougars. I think they are great (not Demi Moore she is a douche). I love how they go through a crappy divorce and go out and get onto 20 somethings and this is awesome becuase guys have been doing this since the beginning of time. I hope I do not get into the situation where I become a cougar but if it does happen I am going to have some fun!

I cant remember the last time I was this excited for a show since maybe The OC. To me that is saying a lot. I don't dislike Courtney Cox but I don't really like her at the same time. Busy Phillips on the other hand......she is awesome. I can imagine her giving the coolest birds and the bees talk without making it awkward. I just think she is cool and yes I do want to be her friend and I am still waiting for my invite to one of her cool dinner parties (I am pretty sure she has these but have no proof).

So the show. I believe all of the characters work individually but when they are in relationships with one another it just doesnt work. Courtney as the hot shrinking violet works but then when you see how she interacts with her son it just doesnt make sense, the awkward son at high school, the slutty best friend (work it Busy!), and the the douche ex husband (which is more like a really bad impersonation of Billy Madison)

I think the mum is meant to be this cool, hip mum (like Busy!) but she sort of comes across as the worst mum ever. Like when she is giving that random guy a BJ and the son walks in is probably the most painful scene of the whole show. I am guessing it took a while to shoot too as (like most of the show) it just doesn't seem to flow.

The son is meant to be in high school but why does he look like he is in uni studying some douche degree like sociology? And plus, where are his hot friends? Seriously the show is called COUGARTOWN

The dad is just plain confusing. Courtney worked really hard to put him through some sort of degree (lawyer or something - either one is not believeable)and then he screwed her over so now he is mowing the lawns at his "son's" school? Pick a back story and stick to it.

Busy is great. The End.

oh, and that random hot guy across the street that she flashes and fantasises over. Yes he is hot but he reminds me of Eddie Cibrian and he is a bit of a douche. I guess somewhere in the plot they sleep together and then rediscover love blah blah blah. He has no real relevance (I dont think to the show except to be "that hot guy" on the show. He is the Jesse Metcalfe with the shirt on).

I actually like this show and I really hope they find a flow and story lines that are not moronic.

P.S. Courtney, your Madonna crypt keeper arms are creepy and you need to Heidi Montag them stat!
