I must have had my Dick Tracy hat on last night because I figured out why Cougar Town will never be successful.....it only goes for half an hour and seeing the characters are poorly formed they will never get the chance to really grow and thus gain any sort of recognition from the audience. SO the show has to be extended to an hour long. Not that hard and I actually believe that writers could make it work. Maybe.
A quick recap of episode 2 is that Jules realises she never got to live her crazy 20's because she had a kid and didnt have a funny story involving an all night boozy slut fest. That's it. For half an hour that's the premise. She does go out and does that (which I actually didnt mind as they retold it through mobile phone pictures) but then the rest of the episode falls a bit flat.
There is more interaction with the hot neighbour but the way he is being played is quite frustrating. He is meant to be a man whore with feelings (?) but is a total douche to Jules which means (obviously) she wants to communicate more with him. "Paper buddies" is the lamest thing I have ever heard of and if I ask anyone (ever) to be my "paper buddy" I might as well go live in Penrith with a house filled with cats becuase I think that is what hell is like.
Alright so after watching 2 episodes I am officially confused (and very frustrated) as to WHY they made the ex-husband a reject from Police Academy. His character makes no sense to ANYONE on the show. To see Jules, someone who apparently is responsible and has the business acumen to run a Real Estate thingy (not too sure what it is as that older cougar always walks in on her house inspections) would ever go out with someone like that. I know they met in their 20's but I am pretty sure she hasn't changed her dating type that much. And to make his character more pointless, they make him drive a golf buggy around for an entire episode and all of his interactions are based on him "driving a golf buggy".
Busy was the fun and loveable slut and she did have all of the best lines. The son apparently is straight (for some reason I thought he was gay). The best friend is annoying and so what's the word.....unbelievable. And to top the confusion off Jules gets a random young hot boyfriend that we have never met before and I doubt we will see again.
All of this is making me think, why was this never an hour long? The story lines are not solid enought to be engaging for the 22 minutes they are on for and the characters do not make sense to the past, present and/or future. So I am stuck wondering, how long will this show go on for? After the shock and cliche fun value fades there is nothing to keep the audience ineterested.
In concluson, I am happy that the crypt keeper arms did not invade my personal space in episode 2.
